We are proud to announce the completion of the €3.5 million Battery Road Longford Active Travel Scheme—a transformative project delivering 1.3km of dedicated cycling infrastructure along the R198 Battery Road, connecting Longford town centre to the N4 Axis Centre via a 700-metre stretch from McDonald’s Roundabout to St Alban’s entrance
This scheme marks a series of firsts and sets new standards for active travel in Ireland:
• Ireland’s First Coloured Cast-in-Situ Separator Kerb: Introducing a visible and effective safety feature to segregate cyclists from vehicular traffic.
• 1.3km of New 2-Metre-Wide Red Macadam Cycle Tracks: Providing a continuous, safe, and comfortable route for cyclists of all ages and abilities.
• Junction Priority Crossings: Enhanced safety at key residential entrances ensures seamless movement for cyclists and pedestrians.
• Signal-Controlled Junction at Lisbrack: Improving traffic flow and safety for all road users.
• Right Turning Lanes at Abbeycartron and Demesne Entrances: Facilitating safer access for vehicles while protecting vulnerable road users.
• Multiple Pedestrian Crossing Points: Making Battery Road more accessible and inclusive for all.
• Comprehensive Streetscape Improvements: Including underground ESB networks, upgraded public lighting, and enhanced landscaping for a more attractive urban environment.
• Traffic Calming Measures: Carriageway narrowing and street space reallocation create a safer, more people-focused street, encouraging walking and cycling.
The Battery Road scheme not only improves connectivity between key community, retail, and residential areas but also sets a benchmark for future active travel initiatives across the country.
Congratulations to everyone involved in delivering this landmark project for Longford and for Ireland’s active travel network!
